#VW to pay owners up to $10K, buy back up to 475,000 diesel cars

  In what is being called a ground-breaking agreement, Volkswagen will pay $14.7 billion not only to compensate owners for its polluting "clean" diesel-powered cars, but for environmental mitigation and to set up a fund to promote zero-emissions technology, the government announced Tuesday. genesis mining promo code


Owners of the 475,000 Volkswagen vehicles with 2-liter diesels covered under the settlement will receive payments ranging from $5,100 to $10,000. In addition, Volkswagen will either repair their cars to bring them into compliance with emissions laws or buy them back in order to scrap them.


"We're getting VW's polluting vehicles off the road and we're reducing harmful pollution in our air, pollution that you never should have been emitted in the first place," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy at a press conference. She called it a "groundbreaking settlement."


VW has admitted to inserting software in VW and Audi cars with 2-lliter engines going back to 2009 that allows them to beat emissions tests. The case reflects "one of the most flagrant violations of environmental and consumer laws in our country's history," Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates told reporters.


She said that VW could face additional actions as well. A case is still pending against the automaker over its 3-liter diesel vehicles. Plus, she says the Justice Department is "aggressively" looking at possible criminal prosecutions involving "multiple companies and multiple individuals."


In addition to more than $10 billion for the owners and the cars, VW will pay $2.7 billion in environmental mitigation and another $2 billion on clean-emissions technology. The total could climb even higher as other cases against VW, including one from states' attorneys general, come to conclusion.


In any case, 85% of the cars have be fixed or off the road by July, 2019.


Under the agreement, Volkswagen will buy back cars at prices tied to last September before the scandal became known and resale values plummeted. The automaker will not be allowed to ship them to other countries to avoid scrapping them. For those owners who elect to keep their cars, VW still hasn't disclosed how it will go about repairing them or how much their performance will be affected. Some may not be repairable.


The amount of the payment to owners, which would be in addition to the buyback price, will depend on a number of factors, such as type, age of the vehicle, number of miles and others. The goal, say those involved in crafting the agreement, was to make sure those who trade in aren't favored over those who elect to have their cars fixed.

Inside a #phishing attack

Tracking down the phisher

Several weeks ago, a key member of the WatchGuard Technologies finance team was targeted by a spear phishing attempt. Spear phishing is a type of phishing attack in which the perpetrator customizes their attack to a particular individual or group of individuals. The attacker gathers information on the victim and then tailors the attack to be more likely to fool the target. The would-be attack arrived as an email appearing to come from the finance employee’s manager, requesting an urgent wire transfer.

Thanks to proper training, the finance employee recognized that the email’s blatant disregard for the official chain of command and finance protocols was suspicious and alerted the proper personnel. Marc Laliberte, a threat analyst at Watchguard, walks us through the ordeal.

Time to fight back

Rather than simply disregarding the attack, WatchGuard set out to learn as much as they could by playing along with the attacker.  Laliberte responded to the first email and the attacker replied, asking “the finance employee” to contact them via text to a phone number the attacker claimed was the manager’s personal line.

This email’s source address was a seemingly random seven-digit number at gmail.com. The attacker didn’t try to spoof the message to make it appear to come from a WatchGuard account. Instead, the attacker relied on the message’s “From:” header to fool the target. Most mail clients use the “From:” header to display who a message came from, and often the client only shows a sender’s first and last name. In this phishing email, the “From:” header showed the WatchGuard manager’s first and last name, which might convince uninformed employees that the message really did come from that manager.

Digging around

Laliberte found that the phone number provided by the attacker was registered as a landline through Level 3 Communications with an area code matching Jacksonville, Fla. He suspected that the attacker probably was never physically located in Jacksonville, instead, he likely used a forwarding service to send and receive text messages through this number. Attackers commonly leverage the global nature of internet and telephony services to hide the true location of their attacks.

Laliberte assumed the identity of the target employee and texted the attacker using a disposable phone number. A day later, the attacker replied and quickly got to the point, requesting an urgent fund transfer as payment for a shipment of WatchGuard Fireboxes arriving the following week. He kept the attacker on the hook by alluding that a money transfer was possible and asked for further details.

Pay up?

The attacker asked for a wire transfer of $20,000 to man he claimed was in New York. Some quick research revealed that there were no fraud references related to the provided name. The attacker also sent account and routing numbers for the wire transfer itself. While providing bank account details adds legitimacy to transactions, it also increases the authorities’ ability to track payments in fraud investigations, making it risky for attackers to do. It appeared that the account details provided likely belonged to a compromised account that the attacker could quickly transfer money out of.

Expecting payment

At this point, Laliberte had gathered all of the information the attacker would voluntarily share, but still had no clear picture of where he was located. However, the attacker did expect a wire transfer confirmation message. He masked the IP address of a honeypotserver behind a URL-shortener and sent it to the attacker disguised as a confirmation link.

I got you ... maybe

When the attacker visited the link, it redirected him to the honeypot server where Laliberte logged his source IP and browser User-Agent data. The attacker’s source IP was registered to Airtel Networks Limited, a mobile Telco out of Nigeria. The User-Agent data told Laliberte that the attacker was connected to the honeypot using an iPhone running iOS 9.3.1. This confirmed the hypothesis that the attacker was using a forwarding service to receive text messages through the Jacksonville phone number. Though the attacker was in Nigeria, he used a bank account (TD Bank) that required a permanent US address, meaning the account was either compromised or the attacker had an accomplice in the US (often called a mule) who could retrieve any transferred money. Laliberte contacted TD Bank to allow them to begin an investigation on attempted fraud by someone with access to the provided account.

Use your training

This spear phishing attempt makes it clear just how big of a problem these attacks are today. No spear phishing protection is perfect. Even with technological solutions likeDMARC or S/MIME, phishing messages will still slip through and reach employees. It is critical that IT professionals train their users on how to spot and report attempted phishing attacks. With the growth of spear phishing, organizations need to update their training programs to help employees learn how to spot these more convincing, targeted email scams.

“We know there’s been a lot of demand for our services in the UK, we know there’s a strong desire, New York and London are financial capitals of the world and speak the same language,” Tyler Winklevoss told the Telegraph.

As a relatively new exchange, trading in Gemini is comparatively low to the likes of major Chinese exchanges among other established exchanges around the world. Still, Tyler Winklevoss insists that the exchange is only getting started. Speaking to CNBC, he stated:

Our onboarding queue is huge, it’s continued to grow … we have only been operational for about eight months now … each month has increased growth better than the next. This month we are already on track to do … a trading volume of around $100 million of U.S. dollar notional value of both bitcoin and ether.

Bitcoin & Ether

Bitcoin price has seen a rapid resurgence in recent times with investors flocking to the cryptocurrency to see it as a store of value. The Winklevoss twins opined in a recent interview that bitcoin was “better at being gold than gold” as a safe haven and an entity with better money characteristics. Tyler Winklevoss sees further room for bitcoin price to appreciate and grow, comparing it directly to gold. He stated:

If we look at the overall market cap of bitcoin … if it is really a gold 2.0 … then the market cap is actually quite small and there is potential for a lot more increase in the price because you look at gold and the market cap is trillions of dollars.

The Gemini bitcoin exchange launched in October 2015 in New York and added Ethereum’s token ether to its stable of supported cryptocurrencies in May this year. It gained approval from the Department of Financial Services in the state to become the first “licensed ether exchange” in the world. The exchange was already operating under the regulation of a fiduciary, enabling the exchange to offer services to individual and institutional clients without the need for the much-debated BitLicense.

Tyler Winklevoss sees contrasting tones with the two premier cryptocurrencies, telling theWall Street Journal that they “serve different purposes.”

Early last week Focus Taiwan picked up a report from India Today that said HTC secured orders from Google to make two smartphones, coded Marlin and Sailfish.

India Today speculated that Marlin and Sailfish could be based on the HTC 10 if the rumors it heard are accurate. However, both devices could be powered by the Snapdragon 821 processor instead of the Snapdragon 820 that’s inside the HTC 10 and many other flagships from the competition, including the Galaxy S7, the LG G5 and the OnePlus 3.

#BMW 's Vision Next 100 is the concept car of my childhood dreams

 BMW is on a world tour this year with a selection of concept cars that present its vision for the next 100 years of automotive development. Catering to our wildest adolescent fantasies, these cars are aggressively, almost absurdly futuristic, with this week's debutant Rolls-Royce and Mini models exhibiting a preference for pizzazz over practicality.  I was already a fan of the futurism embodied by BMW's Vision concept when it was made official back in March, but seeing it in all its aerodynamic glory in London this week, I'm upgrading my excitement by a couple of notches. On the outside, a new Alive Geometry will shift the car's shape in accordance with how it is being driven, flaring out or tapering down as required.

 The purpose of the BMW Vision Next 100 cars is to create concepts that people can engage with, and the company firmly believes that the emotional driving experience must be informed by emotional design. That's why the headlights look like a falcon's talons and why the golden honey paintjob splinters out into small polygons as it morphs imperceptibly from the metal exterior to the darkened windows.

 I didn't get to see inside this particular BMW, but the company has helpfully provided video materials showing off what the ride would be like. Comprising both a Boost mode for the best of BMW's storied driving tradition and an Ease mode for a relaxing, autonomous ride, this vision of the future aims to be both thrilling and convenient.

Unikernel power comes to Java, Node.js, Go, and Python apps

An open source project sponsored by EMC allows applications written in C/C++, Java, Go, Node.js, and now Python to be transformed into unikernels -- operating systems that do nothing but run a single, dedicated application.

 UniK (pronounced "unique") is one of several experiments with unikernels to see if their minimal footprint and security profile can work better than containers for some workloads.

 UniK promises a simple way for an organization to find out if a unikernel version of a given app runs better than its containerized counterpart. The workload is about the same as would be required to deploy the app as a container.

 Written mainly in Go, UniK compiles images that can then be deployed to Virtualbox, VMware vSphere, or Amazon Web Services. Go, C++, Node.js and Python are made part of a runtime that uses the rumprun platform, an existing toolchain for creating unikernel-like software. Java apps are deployed via OSv, a single-application OS that comes with JVM support.

 Docker has been interested in bringing its container system and unikernels closer together. Back in January, it acquired Unikernel Systems, hoping to add the company's toolchain so that deploying unikernels is as easy as compositing a Docker image. UniK uses Docker images for its needed tooling, but it doesn't yet incorporate Unikernel Systems' technology -- so far, no implementation of a unikernel-centric Docker has been available for public use. 

 Another recent project, IncludeOS, has attempted to ease unikernel creation, but not in as broad a manner as UniK. IncludeOS provides a C++ library for a minimal level of operating system functionality to a program, allowing it to be deployed as a self-contained image that boots on a hypervisor. Again, it's C++ only, where UniK aims to encompass multiple languages.

IHS: #Chromecast Sales Overtake Apple TV for First Time

 Apple's TV has lost traction versus rival Google's smaller Chromecast stick. And while Apple might make up a little room if it announces a fifth-generation Apple TV at Monday's Worldwide Developers Conference (and launches it soon after), there are plenty of rumors that suggest the event isn't going to have any big hardware announcements whatsoever.  According to a recent report from IHS, the Chromecast has struggled to beat the Apple TV throughout much of its life so far. However, the tides finally turned in Google's favor in the first quarter of the year, where IHS figures put Chromecast sales at 3.2 million to the Apple TV's 1.7 million.

 As for why, IHS maintains that Google has been pushing a much different (and seemingly more successful) strategy for selling its streaming stick than Apple's marketing for its media box. And you can probably even guess what that is: the Chromecast, at $35, has incredible mass-market appeal, and it is priced low enough that even those who are not quite sure if they'll use one very much might be tempted to pick one up. It's simple. A Chromecast doesn't even need a specialized UI or remote for you to use it—just your phone or tablet and, of course, Chromecast-compatible apps.

 "The Apple TV, starting at $149, has inexorably been shuttled into the segment's top end. The device is now positioned as a premium hub that appeals to consumers of digital video, to casual gamers and to iOS owners who are intrinsically attracted to Apple's singular user-interface," reads IHS' report.

 That said, the significant price delta (and different features) between the two devices does skew an apples-to-apples comparison a bit. It's like saying Android devices are obliterating iOS devices in sales—a true statement, but one that conceals the simple fact that there are many manufacturers making many Android devices, but only one manufacturer making iOS devices.

 IHS also expects that this trend—the Chromecast beating the Apple TV in sales—is likely to persist, though the firm didn't share any estimates on what an updated Apple TV might be able to do for the company's sales, if anything.

June Android distribution: #Marshmallow at 10%, Lollipop at 35%

 It's that time of month again when Google gives developers and users a quick glimpse at the health of the Android market as far as version numbers go. And boy how the mighty have fallen! The combined might of the three Jelly Bean releases no longer has any hold, as it goes below a fifth of the market. Lollipop has taken over its throne, becoming the largest so far. Meanwhile, Marshmallow rises at a steady pace, now occupying 10% of the Android space.

For a long time, Android 4.1 to 4.3 reigned unchallenged, reaching heights in early 2014 when it nearly conquered three-fourths of the pie. Which isn't surprising considering we're talking about three Android releases lumped together. A year later, it would finally be dethroned by Android 4.4 "KitKat", though the latter's victory would be short lived, as Android 5.0 and 5.1 Lollipop would overtake it in just 8 months.

Now the Jelly Bean is near the end of its journey. Android 4.3 in particular, teeters close to the lower limit. It now stands at 2.7%, not that far from Android 2.3 Gingerbread's 2.0%. Any distribution that goes below 0.1% gets removed from the list. Amusingly enough, Android 2.2 Froyo still remains solidly in its place, which it has held for the past 6 months.

Looking to the future, it would seem that Marshmallow's path is secure. But there's a catch. Android N is around the corner and it brings some features that are quite irresistible. There's split screen for one. But there are also other goodies like a more reasonable Doze mode and quicker system updates. It is possible that Marshmallow might reach its highest point in just a month or two. It's not exactly unheard of, as versions like Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) and 5.0 (Lollipop) never reached the 20% that its other siblings enjoyed.

Given how many Marshmallow devices there are in the market now, and some are still getting their updates, it could yet be another messy phase as far as Android fragmentation is concerned.

#Google tests a cleaner look for Search

 Google has begun to test a new Material Design layout for its desktop search results. The company introduced Material Design in 2014 at its annual I/O conference during its Android Lollipop unveil, promising to spread the new grid-based look across Android, Chrome OS and the web. It's... taken a while to get there, and arguably the most important of Google's web properties -- YouTube and Search - still haven't made the switch. Last month, Google began testing a fresh look for its video streaming site, and now, we're beginning to see that familiar grid of floating cards show up in google.com search results.

The change isn't exactly monumental: Google Search has always returned results in a grid, so the basic layout is functionally identical to the current one. The biggest change is a visual one: the background in the test is a light gray, and individual search results are boxed in white with a small drop shadow to imply elevation.

Another major change is to the informative modules that Google shows for certain terms. Typing "Run The Jewels," for example, would bring up a list of search results accompanied by a card displaying information on the musicians and upcoming events on the right. In the new layout, this card is shown inline, before the regular search results. Given this is just a limited test, there's every chance this behavior will change if Google makes the Material Design layout the default.

Small changes elsewhere include new iconography for the magnifying glass in the search box, and switching out the settings cog for the three vertically aligned dots. Both the changes will be familiar to Android users. The google.com homepage has also been modified in line with the new aesthetic.

The test seems to have begun fairly recently, and on a small scale: There have been a few mentions of the new layout on Twitter and Reddit over the past week, and it's only showing up in one Engadget editor's search results. The company frequently trials new features and layouts on a small group of its users, seemingly at random. Many of the changes never make their way out of the testing phase. We've reached out to Google to ascertain its plans for the new design.

The company doesn’t disclose how many of those people check in daily, but in the third quarter, it said about 44 percent of monthly users are active each day in the service’s top 20 markets. Twitter Chief Financial Officer Anthony Noto said at the time that the percentage had been stable but that “we’ll be sure to disclose” if there was a significant change. The company hasn’t given an update since then. This implies a daily active user count of 136 million. Twitter and Snapchat declined to comment.

 Snapchat has made communicating more of a game by letting people send annotated selfies and short videos. It has allowed people to use its imaging software to swap faces in a photo, transform themselves into puppies, and barf rainbows. (In March, Facebook said it acquired the startup behind an app called Masquerade, which offers similar photo-manipulation tools.) Snapchat encourages people to visit the app frequently with features such as the "Snapstreak," which counts the number of consecutive days they’ve been communicating with their closest friends. Snapchat’s other content, such as news and Live Stories, disappear after 24 hours.
